Dr Burbidge
01 March 2016Well after forty three years serving the williamstown community Dr Mary Burbidge has decided to retire. Mary of course is a lifelong resident of Williamstown. Following graduating in medicine from Melbourne University Mary was the first resident medical officer to be appointed at the then Williamstown District Hospital. The year was spent honing her skills in obstetrics and anaesthetics, as well as medicine in general, areas she continued to practice in on subsequently joining Dr Keith Harrision in his practice. She has remained there since and consequently its longest serving medico.
During hher medical career Mary developed an interest and an expertise in the area of disability medicine. This expanded to her serving with both Monash and Melbourne universities in developing services and resources in the area. Locally Mary has been involved in the provsion of residential services for the disabled. She also served a stint on the Victorian Guardianship Tribunal.
Outside medicine Mary has also served on the Williamstown City Council as well as suppporting th local Australian Labour Party branch. Her service has been recognised with the naming of Burbidge Drive in the Rifle Range development.
One of the projects that her council service involved was the development of the Newport Lakes precinct. This is in keeping with another of Mary's interest, a "twitterer", no not the internet site, bird watching. Other interests are singing and writing, as well as her family. Hopefully her retirement will allow increased involvement in these activities and even a little travel.
All at the surgery hope you enjoy your retirement, and the activities it allows. Mary's last day is the 31st May.
