Dr Lim graduated from the University of Singapore in 1967 and has worked as a general practitioner in Singapore, Malaysia and the United Kingdom before migrating to Sydney in 1977. He has undergone training as a specialist physician in UK and is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom. Besides English Dr Lim speaks Hokkien(Fujian),Mandarin, Teochew, Cantonese, Malay and Indonesian. He has special interests in cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and nutrition. He also practises acupuncture.
